In freestyle, your skis need to land, spin and ride backwards. That's why they're twin tips with bindings mounted closer to the centre, and why jackets and trousers are baggy, closer to snowboard gear than to piste clothing.

Brands in store: Salomon, Rossignol, K2, Black Crows, Atomic, Marker, Quiksilver, Roxy, Uvex, Level, Reusch, Leki

## The kit, piece by piece

- **Helmet**: A park helmet is low-profile and wraps well around the back of the head, which hits first when you fall backwards. Replace it after a hard impact, even if nothing shows on the outside. (Uvex)
- **Goggles**: A wide cylindrical lens lets you see the edges of the kicker and the landing. If you spend all day in the park, a photochromic lens covers both sun and flat light. (Uvex)
- **Jacket**: A long, loose cut leaves you free for grabs and spins and covers your back when you sit in the snow. Look for a shell rated 10,000 mm or more with vents: between jumps you work hard and sweat. (Quiksilver, Roxy)
- **Trousers**: Baggy and in tough fabric, because in the park you sit down and fall. The gaiters cover the boot cuff without restricting your ankle. (Quiksilver, Roxy)
- **Gloves**: Park skiers often go for thin gloves that let you feel the grab on the ski. In the cold, you need an insulated pair with a reinforced palm. (Level, Reusch)
- **Skis**: Twin tips, with a raised tip and tail, 85–95 mm underfoot: you can land and ski backwards. Thicker edges and bases take the knocks on rails and boxes. (Salomon, Rossignol, K2, Black Crows, Atomic)
- **Bindings**: Mounted closer to the centre of the ski, so it behaves the same going forwards and backwards. A binding with good elastic travel at toe and heel absorbs landings without releasing when it shouldn't. (Marker, Salomon, Atomic)
- **Boots**: A softer flex, between 90 and 110, lets your ankles bend on landings. A shock-absorbing sole reduces the impact on your heels. (Salomon, Atomic, K2)
- **Poles**: Park skiers use poles a few centimetres shorter than usual, so they don't catch on jumps and rails. Small baskets are enough: park snow is packed. (Leki)

## How to choose a freestyle ski

- **Length**: Between nose and forehead, or a little shorter for rails. The raised tail shortens the edge in contact with the snow, so a twin tip can be a few centimetres longer than a piste ski.
- **Waist width**: 85–95 mm for the park; 95–105 mm if the same ski also goes into powder.
- **Camber and rocker**: Camber underfoot for pop off the kicker, rocker in tip and tail for landing, spinning and skiing switch.
- **Flex**: Medium to soft: the ski forgives landings and bends into butters. A stiffer ski holds up better on big jumps and at speed.

## Livigno's snowparks

The Mottolino snowpark is about 800 m long, with more than 60 features, 4 jump lines and a big air landing airbag over 50 m long. In February 2026, the Livigno Snow Park at Mottolino hosted the Olympic freeski events: slopestyle, big air and halfpipe. For your first jumps, Amerikan Snowpark has 15 features.

## What do you ride in the park?

- **Rails and boxes**: A shorter, softer ski around 85 mm with thick edges: it turns easily and bends on rails. Pair it with a soft boot and short poles.
- **Jumps**: A 90–95 mm twin tip, a little longer and stiffer, that stays steady in the air and on landing. A boot with 100–110 flex keeps you standing on big jumps.
- **Park and powder**: A 95–105 mm twin tip with a longer tip rocker: it rides the park and floats when it snows. Off piste, always carry a transceiver, shovel and probe.

## From the park to the workshop

We help you choose skis, boots and outerwear for the way you ride the park. In our Ski Service workshop, with Wintersteiger machines, we repair bases and fix edges after days on the rails, from €12 (Express) to €49 (Pro). Livigno is a duty-free zone, so no VAT is applied.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a twin-tip ski?

A ski with both tip and tail turned up, almost symmetrical. That lets you ski and land backwards (switch). It's the typical freestyle ski, but many twin tips are also used on piste and in powder.

### Can I use freestyle skis on piste?

Yes, especially 90–100 mm models, which are all-mountain skis with a raised tail. On hard snow they grip less than a piste ski, because the contact edge is shorter and the flex softer. If you ski a lot of piste and only a little park, go for a stiffer twin tip.

### Where is the snowpark in Livigno?

The Mottolino snowpark is about 800 m long, with more than 60 features and 4 jump lines; in February 2026 it hosted the Olympic freeski events. For beginners there's Amerikan Snowpark, with 15 features, and Carosello 3000 has The Beach snowpark.

### Why are freestyle jackets and trousers baggy?

So you can move freely in grabs and spins, and so your back and knees stay covered when you sit or fall in the snow. The style comes from snowboarding. The layer underneath should breathe, because in the park you work hard and sweat.
