Alpine skiing is classic downhill skiing, but not everyone skis the same way. On piste, in the park and in powder you need different skis, boots and clothing: here's what matters in each.

Brands in store: Atomic, Völkl, Head, Rossignol, Salomon, Nordica, Black Crows, K2

## How to choose your skis

- **Length**: Beginners go for chin height, confident skiers between nose and forehead, experts and freeriders around their own height. Weight and speed matter as much as height.
- **Waist width**: At 66–80 mm it's a piste ski, quick edge to edge; at 80–95 mm an all-mountain ski; from about 95–100 mm a freeride ski that floats in deep snow.
- **Camber and rocker**: Camber is the arch underfoot: it gives grip and rebound on groomed snow. Rocker lifts the tip and tail earlier, so the ski floats in powder and starts a turn with less effort.
- **Boot flex**: For men roughly 70–90 for beginners, 90–110 for confident skiers and 110–130 or more for experts, a little lower on women's models. Every brand measures flex its own way, so try boots on.

## Skiing in Livigno

Livigno has 115 km of pistes across three ski areas: Carosello 3000, Mottolino and Sitas. The highest point you can reach on skis is 2,794 m, at the top of the Altavista chairlift, opened in December 2025. In the same valley you'll find timed race courses, the Mottolino snowpark and the Carosello 3000 Powder Slopes, left ungroomed after big snowfalls.

## Where do you ski most?

- **On piste**: Look for a 66–80 mm waist with full camber and a precise boot: it's what drives the ski onto its edge.
- **In the park**: A twin-tip ski at 85–95 mm, with a raised tip and tail and bindings mounted closer to the centre, so you can land and ski backwards.
- **In powder**: From 100 mm up, rocker in tip and tail, and a length around your height. Off piste, always carry a transceiver, shovel and probe.

## Advice, Ski Service and rental

First we ask how and where you ski, then we show you skis and boots from different brands, with no favourites. Our Ski Service workshop, with Wintersteiger machines and technicians who ski, takes care of bases, edges and wax, from €12 (Express) to €49 (Pro). If you'd rather rent, book online through Alpy and pick up from the day before, after 3:30 pm.

## Frequently asked questions

### What's the difference between piste, freestyle and freeride skis?

Mainly width and profile. A piste ski is narrow, 66–80 mm underfoot, with full camber to grip on hard snow; a freestyle ski is a twin tip, with a raised tip and tail for landing and skiing backwards; a freeride ski is wide, from 100 mm up, with rocker to float in powder.

### How do I choose the right ski length?

As a general rule, beginners pick skis around chin height, confident skiers between nose and forehead, and experts or freeriders around their own height. Weight and style matter as much as height: heavier or faster skiers can go a few centimetres longer. In store we help you find the right length for the way you ski.

### What flex should my ski boots have?

It depends on level, weight and style: typically 70–90 for beginners, 90–110 for confident skiers and 110–130 or more for experts, slightly lower on women's models. The number isn't consistent between brands, so try boots on and flex your knees. Too stiff and you end up on your heels and tire quickly; too soft and the boot can't control the ski.

### Is a ski helmet compulsory in Italy?

Yes: in Italy helmets are compulsory for everyone, whatever their age, for alpine skiing, snowboarding, telemark and sledging (art. 17, Legislative Decree 40/2021, amended in 2025). The helmet must be certified to the current standards. Rules can change, so check the latest ones before the season.
