B Workshop

Five steps,
one ski.

  1. 01InspectionWe check the base and edges against the light: scratches, core shots, rust, bent edges or a base that's no longer flat. That tells us what your skis actually need.
  2. 02RepairDeep scratches and core shots are filled with new base material, then levelled. Water and dirt stay out, and the ski glides evenly again.
  3. 03Base grindThe stone on our Wintersteiger machine flattens the base and cuts a structure into it: a fine pattern that breaks the film of water between ski and snow and helps the ski glide.
  4. 04EdgesEdges are sharpened at the right angle, on the side and on the base. A sharp edge holds on hardpack and ice and makes every turn more precise.
  5. 05WaxingWax goes on hot, chosen for the day's snow, then it's scraped and brushed. It protects the base and keeps it running fast.

i In short

Sport Extreme runs a Ski Service workshop inside its Livigno shop, equipped with Wintersteiger machines. Work ranges from a quick wax to a full base repair and a race structure, in five packages from €12 to €49. Skis are dropped off and collected in the shop, which is open every day.

C Today in Livigno

Today's recommended wax

This box reads the live air temperature in Livigno and suggests the right type of wax. Treat it as a general guide: it's colder up the mountain than in the village, and snow in the sun changes through the day. In the shop, our technician also looks at the snow itself.

—°…

  • Cold snowDry snow with sharp crystals: you need a hard, cold-weather wax. Glide is slower, so a well-structured base matters even more.
  • Mid-range snowDry and cold, but not extreme: an all-round wax of medium hardness works well.
  • Warm snowNear zero the snow softens and turns damp in the sun: a soft, warm-weather wax is the better choice.
  • Wet snowAbove zero the snow is wet and tends to grab the ski. Use a wet-snow wax and a coarser structure that clears the water.

E When

When to tune

  1. 01First day of the season

After months in storage the base is dry and the edges may have rust. A check and a wax before your first run get the season off to a good start.

  2. 02About every 4 ski days

Wax wears off and edges lose their bite, especially on hard snow. Every four days or so, at least a wax; sooner if you've hit rocks.

  3. 03End of the season

Before you put your skis away, a full service fixes the winter's damage. A layer of wax protects the base over the summer.

F Frequently asked questions

Good to
know.

How much does Ski Service cost at Sport Extreme?

Packages range from €12 to €49. Express, a quick wax, is €12; Standard is €22, Superior €29, Top €39, and Pro, with a race structure and «Carrot» finish, €49. In the shop we'll tell you which one your skis need.

How often should skis be tuned?

A good rule of thumb: on the first day of the season, then roughly every four ski days, and again at the end of the season before storage. On hard or icy snow the edges wear faster, and the same goes if you've hit rocks.

What's the difference between waxing and a base grind?

Waxing adds fresh wax to the base: it improves glide but doesn't fix damage. A base grind runs the base over a stone, flattens it and gives it a new structure. You need one when the base is damaged or the ski still feels slow after waxing.

How do you choose wax by temperature?

The colder the snow, the harder the wax; warm or wet snow needs a soft wax. Our «Today's recommended wax» box starts from the air temperature in Livigno. It's colder higher up, so ask our technician if you'll be skiing up top.

How long does it take to get my skis back?

It depends on the job and the time of season. Call us on +39 0342 996863 or ask in the shop, and we'll tell you when to pick them up.
